About the Ocarina
- The ocarina belongs to a very old family of instruments, believed to date back over 12,000 years.
- Transverse (Sweet potato) is the best known style of ocarina. It has a rounded shape and is held with two hands horizontally.
- Different notes are produced by covering the holes, and by opening and closing more or less of the total hole area.
- The tone is then produced through the sound hole/embouchure. The tone can also be varied by changing blowing strength to bend pitch.
How an ocarina works:
1. Air enters through the windway
2. Air strikes the labium, producing sound
3. Air pulses in and out of the ocarina, as the vessel resonates a specific pitch
4. Covering holes lowers the pitch; uncovering holes raises the pitch
Some Tips:
* To achieve a nice sound on the ocarina create a small opening with your lips and blow using a fast, cool air stream(similar to how you would blow out a candle).
* The speed of your air may need to vary from low notes to high notes. Generally low notes will require slower air than high notes.
Practice changing your air speed by setting your month in a position with a small opening and changing the amount of air without moving your lips.
* Place the necklace around your neck in case the ocarina falls accidently.
* Because of its craftsmanship, the ocarina has a smoked smell. If you don’t quite like it, just put the ocarina in the dry and ventilated place, the smell will dissipate.
* You can rinse the ocarina with water, but do not submerge it in water. Wait until the ocarina is dry before playing again.
